A Day of Purpose and Progress
On Friday, 3rd April 2026, the Association of Adventist Young Professionals Uganda (AAYP) reached a significant milestone during its Kalangala Mission Retreat. Professionals gathered in the Mulabana community on the islands of Lake Victoria to conduct two transformative activities: the official groundbreaking ceremony for a new dormitory and classroom block at SDA Victorious Nursery and Primary School, and a meaningful tree planting exercise.
This day was more than a ceremonial event — it symbolized the dawn of long-term transformation in education, environmental stewardship, and holistic community development for one of Uganda’s island communities.
Groundbreaking for a Better Learning Environment
The centerpiece of the day was the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a dormitory and classroom block at SDA Victorious Nursery and Primary School in Mulabana. The school, established in 2014, has been serving local children but continues to face challenges such as overcrowded and temporary learning spaces, long distances traveled by pupils daily, and inadequate safe accommodation.

The ceremony was graced by distinguished guests and leaders, including:
- Dr. Eleanor Nakintu, AAYP Uganda President
- Pr. Ogwal Immanuel, Adventist World Radio (AWR) Africa President
- UU Leaders like Mrs. Mugerwa Lillian, Elder Kugonza Isaac, Pr. Musonera Jason Junior
- Other AAYP leaders, professionals, church elders, and enthusiastic community members

By investing in this infrastructure project, AAYP aims to create a conducive learning environment that will boost school attendance, enhance academic performance, and provide safer boarding facilities for pupils, many of whom come from distant island communities.

Tree Planting: Investing in a Sustainable Future
Complementing the construction milestone, AAYP members and local residents actively participated in a tree planting initiative. This activity underscored the organization’s commitment to environmental care alongside human development.

Participants planted trees with the clear understanding that they:
- Contribute to a healthier and greener environment
- Help combat the effects of climate change
- Offer long-term ecological balance and potential economic benefits to the community
The tree planting exercise beautifully aligned with the mission’s broader goals, ensuring that development efforts remain sustainable and environmentally responsible.
Holistic Community Transformation
The activities in Kalangala reflect AAYP’s integrated approach to mission work. While the retreat focused on evangelism and spiritual growth, it also addressed practical needs through:
- Educational development — via infrastructure support
- Health improvement — through medical outreaches
- Economic empowerment — via skilling and professional sessions
- Environmental sustainability — through tree planting
This holistic model ensures that the Gospel is demonstrated not only in word but also in tangible acts of service, in line with AAYP’s mission to mobilize Adventist professionals for the spiritual and economic development of society.
Community Engagement and Ownership
A highlight of the day was the strong participation of the Mulabana community. Local residents joined hands with the professionals in both the groundbreaking and tree planting, fostering a deep sense of ownership and partnership.
Such collaboration is vital because it guarantees that:
- Projects will be sustained long after the mission retreat ends
- Communities stay actively engaged in their own development
- The impact multiplies and endures for generations
Looking Ahead
While the groundbreaking marks an exciting beginning, the journey ahead requires continued prayer, resources, and commitment. Construction of the dormitory and classroom block will progress in phases, and the newly planted trees will grow as living symbols of hope and resilience in the community.
