Introduction: Beyond Service to Empowerment
As part of the vibrant Kalangala Mission Retreat 2026, the Association of Adventist Young Professionals Uganda (AAYP) continues to demonstrate its commitment to holistic transformation. On Friday, 3rd April 2026, AAYP professionals conducted a practical community skilling program in Mulabana, Kalangala District.

Going beyond traditional outreach and evangelism, this initiative focused on equipping local residents with hands-on, income-generating skills to promote self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods. The program perfectly complemented other mission activities held the same day — the groundbreaking for a new dormitory and classroom block at SDA Victorious Nursery and Primary School, and a tree planting exercise for environmental stewardship.

This reflects AAYP’s core mission: mobilizing Adventist professionals for the spiritual and economic development of society, in line with our vision of a God-fearing and developed society.
Purpose of the Skilling Program
Island communities in Kalangala often face limited access to formal employment and skills training, which hinders economic progress. Recognizing this gap, AAYP designed the skilling session to:
- Equip participants with practical, marketable skills using locally available resources
- Foster self-sufficiency and reduce dependency on external aid
- Spark entrepreneurship and innovation at the grassroots level
- Enable knowledge transfer so participants can train others in their communities
The training emphasized replicable skills that can generate immediate household benefits while creating long-term economic opportunities.
Skills Delivered During the Training
The session was highly interactive and hands-on, allowing every participant to practice under the guidance of skilled facilitators. Three key skills were covered:
- Liquid Soap Making Participants learned the complete process, from identifying and accurately measuring ingredients to mixing, preparation, quality control, and packaging. This skill addresses daily household hygiene needs while offering strong potential for small-scale business ventures, as liquid soap is in constant demand locally.
- Bar Soap Production Trainees were taught cost-effective methods for producing high-quality bar soap suitable for bathing and laundry use. Emphasis was placed on formulation, molding, quality assurance, and understanding market potential within Kalangala’s communities.
- Basic Table Making (Carpentry Skills) The program introduced fundamental carpentry techniques for constructing simple, durable tables. Participants gained knowledge of basic tools, material selection, step-by-step assembly, and practical applications for both home use and small commercial enterprises. This opens doors for craftsmanship businesses and furniture-related income opportunities.

Community Participation and Engagement
The Mulabana community responded with tremendous enthusiasm. Residents actively participated in demonstrations, asked insightful questions, and showed keen interest in mastering the skills.
The practical, learn-by-doing approach ensured that:
- Participants gained real confidence through immediate practice
- Skills could be applied right away in their homes and businesses
- Knowledge would be shared widely, multiplying the impact across the islands
This active involvement strengthened the spirit of partnership between AAYP professionals and the local community.
Impact and Expected Outcomes
The skilling program is designed to deliver both immediate and lasting benefits:
Short-Term Impact
- Immediate application of skills for improved household hygiene (through soap production)
- Enhanced confidence and practical know-how among participants
- Quick wins in personal and family well-being
Long-Term Impact
- Creation of small income-generating activities and micro-enterprises
- Greater economic self-reliance and reduced dependency
- Strengthened local economy through skills-based entrepreneurship
- A more empowered, resilient, and self-sustaining community
AAYP’s Vision for Sustainable Development
This skilling initiative aligns seamlessly with AAYP’s values of innovativeness, quality service, and teamwork. By combining economic empowerment with spiritual outreach, medical services, educational infrastructure (the new dormitory/classroom block), and environmental care (tree planting), AAYP is delivering a truly holistic mission impact.
These integrated efforts ensure that the Gospel is lived out through practical acts of service, creating transformation that endures long after the retreat concludes.
Gratitude and Acknowledgment
AAYP extends heartfelt appreciation to:
- The dedicated facilitators who generously shared their expertise and time
- The enthusiastic Mulabana community members who participated with such energy
- All partners, supporters, and sponsors who made this program possible
- Church leaders, including Pr. Ogwal Immanuel (AWR Africa President), and AAYP President Dr. Eleanor Nakintu for their leadership
Your continued support is building futures filled with hope, dignity, and opportunity.
Conclusion: Skills That Transform Lives
The skilling program in Mulabana stands as a powerful example of how targeted empowerment can change lives. As participants left with new knowledge and practical abilities, they carried the potential to transform not only their own households but the wider Mulabana community.
AAYP remains steadfast in its commitment to empowering communities — one skill, one life, and one island at a time — as we advance God’s work on the shores of Lake Victoria.
