AAYP June Virtual Fellowship Empowers Young Professionals to Build Businesses While Still Employed

The Association of Adventist Young Professionals (AAYP Uganda) successfully hosted its June 2026 Virtual Fellowship, bringing together Adventist professionals from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and the diaspora for an insightful and highly practical session on entrepreneurship and personal development.

Facilitated by Elder JF Muhindo, AAYP Treasurer, the fellowship challenged participants to strategically use their current employment as a launchpad for building sustainable businesses.

Key Highlights from the Presentation

Why Build While Still Employed?

Elder Muhindo emphasized that employment should not be viewed merely as a source of salary but as a foundation for entrepreneurship. It provides financial stability, reduces risk, and allows professionals to test ideas, learn from failures, and build resilience while still having a reliable income.

“Employment can finance entrepreneurship. Your job can become the capital that enables you to build a sustainable future.”

He drew parallels with pastors retiring without personal homes to illustrate the risks of having no fallback plan, urging young professionals to build while they still have the safety net of employment.

Shifting from Consumer Thinking to Value Creation

A central theme was the need to move from being consumers to value creators. Participants were encouraged to identify real problems in their communities and develop practical solutions that can grow into viable businesses. The speaker noted that many successful Ugandan businesses began as side hustles alongside formal employment.

Promising Business Opportunities

The session highlighted high-potential sectors for young professionals, including:

  • Agribusiness, agro-processing, and food supply chains
  • Retail, distribution, and e-commerce
  • Digital businesses and online services
  • Professional services and consultancy (start early — don’t wait for retirement)
  • Education and training services
  • Social media-based enterprises

Financial Discipline & Practical Lessons

Elder Muhindo provided clear guidance on financial management:

  • Separate personal and business finances
  • Register the business early and open a dedicated business account
  • Reinvest profits instead of consuming them early
  • Build savings through SACCOs and investment clubs
  • Avoid excessive borrowing when starting
  • Keep proper records and file taxes consistently

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Participants were cautioned against:

  • Mixing personal and business funds
  • Starting too many ideas at once
  • Investing heavily before validating ideas
  • Ignoring employer confidentiality and conflicts of interest
  • Neglecting work performance while pursuing side ventures

Leveraging Technology & A 90-Day Action Plan

The speaker highlighted how digital tools enable remote business management. He proposed a practical 90-day framework:

Month 1: Validate the Idea (research, test assumptions)

Month 2: Build and Test (small pilot, gather feedback)

Month 3: Measure and Improve (analyze results, refine, repeat)

This structured approach helps reduce risk and build sustainable momentum.

Interactive Discussion & Participant Feedback

The session ended with a lively Q&A. Mpuuga Rocky Katana asked practical questions about starting tax filing for a new company. Elder Mugerwa Paul (Financial Economist) commended the presentation and added valuable insights.

Participants described the fellowship as “powerful,” “enriching,” and “very practical.” Many requested more sessions of this nature.

Closing Remarks

The fellowship concluded with inspiring remarks from church and AAYP leaders:

  • Mrs. Lillian Mugerwa appreciated the relevance of the topic and urged participants to apply the lessons while upholding Christian values and responsible stewardship.
  • Pr. Justus Perez reminded members that professional growth and entrepreneurship must be guided by integrity, service, and God’s purpose.
  • Elder Waiswa thanked the organizing team, the speaker, and all participants, encouraging continued active involvement in AAYP programs.
